In my opinion the act of purchasing weed feels like a kid that has just walked into a candy store. In a candy store there are hundreds of different candies yet you can only choose a few to take home. I compare the act of a kid wandering through a candy store to the feeling I get strolling through a dispensary solely due to the various names and types of cannabis that are readily available. It can be as overwhelming as figuring out what kind of candy to get, especially, with all of the cool names. There is quite literally a type of weed that goes by the name of “Girl Scout Cookies”. I must admit I have purchased “Girl Scout Cookies” in the past because of the irony- I mean how could you not? As chaotic as trying to figure out what type of weed you should be purchasing can be, there are ways to make it easier or at least more organized. I am here to make your search for the right type of weed a walk in the cannabis park.
If you are new to the world of weed indica, sativa and hybrid are the three strains or types of marijuana. Behind every crazy name is the strain it comes from. For example “Girl Scout Cookies” is a hybrid strain. You are probably thinking that all cannabis has the same effect and I am here to confirm that is far from the truth. All types of marijuana will get you high, but the properties of the high you experience are different depending on the strain you are consuming. A high from a strain of indica is relaxing and pain reliving while a sativa high tends to be stimulating and energetic. For a more balanced high you would want to consume a hybrid strain. A hybrid strain comes from a plant that has both sativa and indica properties.
I am sure you are starting to wonder if one strain is better than the others? Truthfully one strain might be better for you personally but all types have proven to be effective. I am going to dig deeper into each strain so that by the end of this article you will feel confident when picking the perfect cannabis for you. As a marijuana connoisseur and an experienced grower/caregiver you can rest assured the information in this article is honest and accurate.
What Does it Look Like?
An indica plant is generally short and bushy. The leaves of the indica plant are broad and have a dark green color to them. It is known for producing high yields and dense buds. The aroma of it is pretty pungent as well. An indica plant would be a great one to start with if you are new to growing your own weed. The strain/plant generally grows fast and flowers early. Another great way to figure out if the random weed your neighbor gave you is an indica strain is if the buds looks a little purple. However, this is not true all the time.
The History of Indica
The indica plant originates from the Middle East where it was forced to adapt to harsh mountainous climates. In turn, like I stated before, this causes the indica plant to flower earlier on and grow faster. The climate where it originates also causes some indica strains to look purple. A colder growing environment can cause cannabis buds to become purple.
The Indica High
I personally choose to smoke an indica strain when I need to relax. I also have chronic back issues and the indica always helps to ease some of the pain. I would describe an indica high as being a full body high. Indica is generally used by people/patients suffering from chronic pain (like my back) and insomnia. Most people consume indica strains during the evening hours. Have you heard of the term couch locked? Well, this is the strain that will do it to you. The indica high is not a bad thing at all, especially if you have been stressed out and just need a few minutes to tune-out and loosen up.
Indica strains tend to have a higher CBD content than other strains. CBD is becoming wildly known as a possible, viable treatment option for patients with chronic pain and anxiety disorders. CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety traits. CBD is interesting because it does not give you a head high but instead a body high, in other words the CBD is not the reason you are eating a bunch of snacks. Indica strains also posses THC and that is what will make you feel high and hungry. This high happens because the THC attaches to cannabinoid 1 receptors in the brain.
Types of Indica Strains
If you are looking for marijuana that will relax your body you should be looking to purchase an indica .
Below is a list of my favorite, accurately named indica strains.
What Does it Look Like?
A sativa plant is generally taller in size compared to an indica plant. It can grow as high as 20 feet, however the average height is about 6 feet. The sativa plants are loosely branched unlike the tight branches on the indica. The plant generally has a light green color and the leaves are long and narrow. A sativa plant is usually not recommended for a novice grower because it takes a longer time (about 10 to 16 weeks) for the sativa plant to “flower”(when you start to notice buds). During their bud time they tend to thrive off of hot, humid temperatures. The aroma of sativa is strong and is often compared to a citrusy, piney smell.
The History of Sativa
The sativa plant originates from countries such as Mexico, Columbia and Thailand. These countries are all closer to the equator hence the reason sativa thrives in a warmer climate. It can also grow wild in many tropical areas around the world.
The Sativa High
I use sativa how some people use coffee. It is the energy I need in the morning, it keeps me focused and driven. I also find that I am much more creative after consuming a sativa strain. Sativa helps to stimulate and energize the mind and body. Most folks consume sativa in the morning, during social events or when they need to awaken their artistic abilities. Some consumers use sativa while trying to start or finish artistic projects such as music, painting or writing. I believe this is because of the immense amount of focus and energy sativa strains provide you with.
Sativa strains contain higher amounts of THC. THC is a psychoactive compound that can cause euphoric feelings also known as a head high. Sativa tends to have lower CBD levels, so you will not feel as much of the body high. Without the high levels of CBD you are less likely to feel super mellow and sleepy, that is why people generally consume it during the early hours of the day. This strain is sometimes used to help people struggling with depression. It is known to heighten moods and leave its users feeling happy and hopeful. I always find that after using a sativa strain my conversations with others tend to feel deeper and more meaningful.
Types of Sativa Strains
If you are in need of feeling more focused, creative and energized a sativa strain should be in your future.
Below are my preferred sativa strains for when I need some energy!
Durban Poison- This is a strain I always have growing, it is my go to!
Purple Haze- Come on, Jimmy Hendrix wrote an entire song about it..
Super Lemon Haze- Even indica users love it.
Sour Diesel- Guaranteed good vibes and no couch lock.
Hybrid
What Does it Look Like?
The hybrid plant depends solely on the combination of the “parent” plants. A hybrid is a plant that is the product of crossbreeding and indica plant and a sativa plant. If the hybrid plant is sativa dominant it will carry on most of the traits of a sativa plant and therefore look more like a sativa plant. The same goes if the plant is indica dominant.
The History of the Hybrid
Obviously these do not really grow organically and they do not originate from a specific place. A hybrid plant typically originates from farms or greenhouses that crossbreed indica and sativa. Most strains of weed you see at dispensaries are hybrids.
The Hybrid High
I usually use hybrid strains when I need some balance. To me a hybrid strain is something you can use day to day because it is a little bit of both indica and sativa almost making it the perfect high. A hybrid plant, like I described before can be either sativa or indica dominant. The dominance of your hybrid will effect the type of high you have. There are also hybrids that are very equal this gives off a very balanced high (like I explained earlier). Basically with a hybrid you are getting the best of both worlds. You can consume a hybrid during the day or in the evening hours, there really is not a specific time recommended for you to use it. The hybrid strain is known for a range of positive affects such as reducing anxiety, easy symptoms of chemotherapy, heightening moods, enhancing creativity, etc. A hybrid strain can be great for everyone, however it is especially great for novice cannabis connoisseurs.
Types of Hybrid Strains
If you are looking for a balanced high, this is it. You get the best of both worlds with the hybrid strain.
There are the top 4 that I would recommend to anyone.
What Weed Should You Purchase or Grow?
It all comes down to your personal preference. You could be looking for a strain that soothes some chronic pain and aids in relaxation. Maybe you are looking for a strain that heightens your energy levels and your creativity. You could also want a perfect balance of both. Finding your favorite strain is all about trial and error. There is not one strain that is better than the other. There are just strains that will work better for you personally. The fun part is trying different types, it is truly a journey. Of course always keep in mind the laws and regulations set in the state or city you live in. Keep an open heart and an open mind and you will find your perfect match.
